THE HISTORY OF PINK BALL GOLF

During the summer of 2006, the idea of some game we called pink ball came up in our regular group of players. We played every Tuesday at 4:30 PM when sufficient daylight hours would permit, and we still do. The group is comprised of four to six regulars who all think they have the game of golf dialed in.

Pink Ball Golf™ was initially designed to make the player with the worst score on each hole, drive and play with a pink ball on the following hole. Soon we were bombarded with all the “what ifs” and “why me’s” and various rule challenges. Shortly thereafter our self appointed Pink Ball™ leader, Ted, came up with a two page list of rules to follow so that everyone alike would understand the parameters of the game. It very quickly caught on and we now play Pink Ball Golf exclusively.

Our original intention was to see how well we could play golf without the assistance of Mulligans and Gimmees; this business is not allowed in any other sport. No sport allows adjustments of the score because the intent wasn’t met, or somebody decided to call it “close enough.” That’s why they have 10 yard chains in a football game. Indeed it is why sports have to have a referee system. Well it was a tough effort, but after we were able to kick the Mulligan/Gimmee habit, we were playing some pretty good golf.

It has taken the ensuing three years for the group to test different rules, come up with new ones and for Ted to finish the result. It is now in the form of a book called “The Gentlemen’s Game of Pink Ball Golf.” The book is a hilarious read, the game is much more fun, and as an unexpected bonus; Pink Ball™ players actually play better golf. Why? Because extra effort is made to avoid bad shots. After all, as gentlemen, we certainly would not want to be seen playing with a pink golf ball.

Try “The Gentlemen’s Game of Pink Ball Golf.” Your game will improve and the fun factor will be pleasantly exaggerated.
